Termination of EA’s online services for many games

According to a report from Chronicle video gamesElectronic Arts will be shutting down online services for a number of different games over the coming weeks. In total, ten games will see services stop online between October 20 and January 19. Affected titles will include The Army of Two: The Fortieth DayAnd the Army two devil gangAnd the Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3And the Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium WarsAnd the Gatling GearsanrashAnd the Mercenaries 2And the mirror edgeAnd the NBA Jam On Fire EditionAnd the shank 2. Online services for these games will end on the following dates:

  • October 20 The Army of Two: The Fortieth Day And the Army two devil gang
  • November 9- Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PS3, Xbox 360), Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (Xbox 360) and Mercenaries 2 (PS3, Xbox 360)
  • November 30– dash
  • January 19– Gatling Gears, Mirror’s Edge, NBA Jam On Fire Edition, And the shank 2

Although the news will likely disappoint some players, it is difficult to say how many players are still playing any of these games. If EA thinks it can still benefit from these games, the company will likely do so for a long time to come. Unfortunately, the truth is that all online games will eventually face a similar fate, no matter how popular they are. Keeping servers online for these games costs time and resources, and eventually companies will decide that the benefits no longer outweigh the negatives.

For now, fans will only have to enjoy the online modes of these games while they still can! There isn’t much time left for Army of Two matches, but fans still have plenty of time for the rest of the matches. When Microsoft shut down servers for several Halo games on Xbox 360 earlier this year, many fans gathered online for some of the final matches. Perhaps fans of these EA games can come together to similarly enjoy these online experiences before they end!
